Horse Shelters & Stables

Treat your horses to the best shelters the market has to offer from Outpost Buildings.

Our horse stalls, paddock shelters and stables are strong and designed with the comfort and safety of you and your horses in mind.

What is a horse shelter?

Outpost Buildings provides several different styles of horse shelter for sale:

+ Paddock shelters. These smaller, kitset buildings are designed to be placed alongside pasturing ground and are great for giving your horses run-in, run-out protection from the elements. They’re also portable, making their placement completely your choice, even after construction.

+ Holding stalls. By simply adding timber gates and rails to a horse paddock shelter, you can instantly transform it into a set of holding stalls - great for when you want to be able to have more control over when your horses are able to roam.

+ Shelter with tack shed. Need easy access to feed, saddles, and other equine equipment? A tackroom attachment to a typical shelter provides protection for both your horses and your supplies.

+ Stables. Outpost horse stables offer larger lodgings for your horses: a great option for those who want plenty of room for their horses. We also offer custom stables to meet your needs.

The benefits of a horse shelter

You and your family need shelter and safety to stay happy and healthy.
Your horse is no different.
An Outpost Buildings horse stable provides everything your horses need from a shelter:

Shelter from the elements.

New Zealand isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Depending on where you live, your horses will get their fair share of wind, rain, snow, hail and/or heat. A shelter provides them a place to return to when they need warmth, comfort and safety from Mother Nature.

Isolation and separation

When horses get sick or just need to be isolated from the other animals, an Outpost Buildings horse shelter, stall or stable provides a safe place for them to recover - physically or mentally - without disturbing the rest of the horses or your other animals.

Easy access equipment storage

Horse shelters are a great place to keep the horses, but Outpost Building shelters also provide space for keeping feed, tack and hay. Need a dedicated space? Check out our options for shelters with tack rooms.

Diet control

Some horses can become obese if left to graze freely at pasture, while other horses require dedicated vitamin and mineral supplements to their feed to improve or maintain their health. An Outpost horse shelter gives you the ability to better control your horses’ diets with a specific space for providing and monitoring feed intake.

Easier grooming

Outpost horse stables provide an ideal environment for effective grooming, keeping the horse in a single, safe and comfortable place while you brush away the inevitable dirt and grime that builds up at pasture. This is especially important for competition horses, as the stables can also keep your freshened-up horse in a clean environment in the leadup to competition. Who hasn’t had a horse roll around in mud as soon as they get put to pasture? Save yourself the headache. Invest in a stable.

Need to move the herd to new pastures?
Nearly all of our paddock shelters are portable or have portable options, making them ideal for horse owners who want to choose where their horses shelter.
All you need is a tow rope and a 4WD to shift the smaller shelters along with them.

What size horse shelter do I need?

Different sized horses need different sized shelters. We provide a full range of differently sized shelters for any size of horse; from miniatures up to draft horses.

For two horses of 15 hands to 17 hands, we recommend a shelter that is 3.5m x 5.8m.

If you have smaller horses, say 14.3 hands and less, then a shelter that is 2.5m x 3.5m would be suitable for one, and 2.5m x 4.8m for two small horses or ponies.

As a rule of thumb, experts advise at least 3m x 3.5m for one horse and 3.5m x 4.8m for two. With an open front, a shelter this size will allow two horses to come and go comfortably and provide sufficient room for both to stand inside with no one getting trapped in the back. A 2.5m high roof will leave space for them to rear and play.

What if my horses don't get along?

It's not uncommon for a highly dominant horse to lay claim to a shelter and deny access to other horses altogether. If the dynamics between your horses prevent them from sharing space, a shelter that’s split into two parts with a timber divider may work.

Ask our team about your options in customising your horse shelter or stable - we’ll find a solution that suits both you and your horses.
